One outdoor event that succeeded in recycling half a ton of waste in just one day

More than 1,200 people participated in the CMPC-UC Outdoor Festival held in San Carlos de Apoquindo, which had made a commitment to be zero waste and encourage a recycling culture. At the end of the day, 450 kilos of waste will get reused.

The CMPC-UC Outdoor Festival brought together more than 1,200 people on the slopes of the San Carlos de Apoquindo hill in Santiago on the first November weekend. Children, teens and adults gathered for an activity with different mountain biking and trail-running circuits for all ages, bringing outdoor sports closer to the whole family.

Not only that, the festival was 100% sustainable. One of the organization’s commitments is to plant a native tree in the south central zone of Chile for each participant. So in May 2023, 1,200 specimens of Ruil, Quillay, Hualo and Roble will be planted in Empedrado, Constitución, Temuco and Los Ángeles.
The second commitment was that of “zero waste”. The event featured five recycling stations with signage and monitors who guided the attendees on how to correctly recycle all the waste produced over the course of the day.

Thanks to this commitment, more than 450 kilos of waste got recycled at the CMPC-UC Outdoor Festival. Specifically, 361.5 kg of glass, 62 kg of cardboard, 23.5 kg of PET bottles, 2.5 kg of lids and 1 kg of cans were collected. In other words, approximately 2.6 kilos of trash got recycled for each attendee.

Festival participants enjoyed 100% biodegradable route markers developed by CMPC, an innovation that made this sporting event the first to use this kind of marker.

CMPC Deputy Manager of Corporate Affairs Francisco Torrealba said, “The commitment to the environment was one of the fundamental pillars of this event that we organized together with the Catholic University Atheltics Club, which we believe was successfully met. In addition to the 1,200 trees that will be planted in the south central zone of Chile, we were also able to recycle nearly half a ton of trash. We hope to hold this event in the future and continue with our commitment of caring for the planet.”

The first ever CMPC-UC Outdoor Festival had five trails of differing lengths for trail running and three for mountain biking, enabling the whole family to participate. In addition to the race, attendees got to enjoy live music, various dishes and a beverage bar.
