CMPC Board Approves Resources for the Construction of the CMPC – DuocUC Campus in Biobio

Good news continue to be written for secondary education students in the neighboring provinces of Biobio and Malleco, as the construction and enabling of the CMPC-DuocUC Campus in the municipality of Nacimiento have started to materialize.

This is after the board of Empresas CMPC approved the necessary contributions for the project in its last meeting on Thursday, July 8th.

The challenge for the new campus, which will operate under the gratuity system, is to cover educational needs for both students and adults, strengthening their knowledge and abilities in a comprehensive manner.

“Having this training center reaffirms our commitment to providing concrete solutions to the needs of our neighbors in these provinces, specifically in municipalities such as Nacimiento, Laja, San Rosendo, Collipulli, Angol, Negrete and Renaico, among others,” says the President of Empresas CMPC, Luis Felipe Gazitúa.

The purpose, adds the executive, “is to keep developing the human capital that the regions of Biobio and La Araucania already have”. This center will have the highest standard in educational quality imparted by the Duoc UC educational center, backed by over 50 years of experience as a leading institution in technical and vocational higher education.

It is estimated that the construction, enabling and land valuation costs for this new center entail contributions close to US$ 20 million.

The establishment’s construction will start at the end of the third trimester, and the approved project comprises technical and vocational undergraduate education, as well as dual education with the CMPC plants in Nacimiento, Laja and Collipulli. It also includes entrepreneurship support and permanent training for employees, supplier companies and the community in general.

There will also be an Entrepreneurship Center in order to foster the professional development of young people and adults, as well as the generation of skills and capabilities among local entrepreneurs and SMEs, as these facilities are also designed to become an open educational space for the entire community.

“For the first time in its history, the municipality of Nacimiento and its surroundings will have a higher education campus that will allow families to stay united, as students will not have to leave their homes to study in other regions. In addition, this will allow consolidating the area as a development hub, which in turn will help decentralize education,” Gazitúa points out.

Wooden Construction

The future campus project will be carried out in a plot of land with an area of 17,900 square meters, which is adjacent to CMPC’s Santa Fe Plant. The future building with start construction during this third trimester and will not go unnoticed, as it will have 3,500 built m2 and use wood as a central material.

It is a new iconic wooden work for the region. In 2019, CMPC inaugurated its thousand square meter offices in Los Angeles, which received recognition at a national level for fundamentally using wood in their infrastructure and architectural design.

This is also aligned with the business development plan which has already implemented Niuform, the new CMPC company dedicated to wooden construction.

The three-floor educational building considers multipurpose rooms specialized for each program, a series of technical labs, a large central library, a square, an inner courtyard, parking lots, a multipurpose court and mobile panels to generate flexible rooms and workshops.

What Will You Be Able to Study?

In operation, the campus considers 700 undergraduate students in different programs such as: Personnel Management Technician, Administration Technician, Logistics Management Technician, Electricity and Industrial Automation Technician, Electromechanical Maintenance Technician, Senior Nurse Technician and Programming Analyst Technician.

These professions go hand in hand with the dual nature of the training, as the building will be built next to the Santa Fe Plant, 60 kilometers away from the Laja Plant and 45 kilometers away from the Pacifico Plant, which will allow the students to acquire practical experience as they advance in their studies.
